This week, I share a verbatim reproduction of a “news report” that was “published” on notice boards about me at the end of my final undergraduate year, by a member of the PRESS team in my university campus hall of residence. This was after I’d led the hall’s Handball team to a first ever victory at the 1992 edition of the University of Ibadan’s Annual Inter-Halls competition.
Now this may appear self-serving, but my ultimate purpose for reproducing this piece (see photo below of photocopied version I obtained before leaving campus) is really to highlight key attributes I possessed back then, which helped me succeed.
Examples:
- works like a “steroid user”
- resilient attitude
- determined to hit the top, trained extra hard

PII 140: True Story – “Tayo Solagbade – Steroid Man” [Authentic Success Leaves a Trail – 3 Key Attributes You Need to Achieve It]
This week, I share a verbatim reproduction of a “news report” that was “published” on notice boards about me at the end of my final undergraduate year, by a member of the PRESS team in my university campus hall of residence.
The above were what the author commended me for in that report, and they have since helped me succeed repeatedly in every other area of endavour I have ever ventured, since leaving the university.
My message therefore is for YOU to understand that not only does authentic success leave a trail, but that achieving IT it in ANY field, will often require that YOU develop and actively use similar attributes.

TAYO SOLAGBADE – STEROID MAN
[NB: U.I. = University of Ibadan]
He was once summoned by the Chief Coach of U.I (Handball) for drug test, but it was all a joke. Yes, he works like a steroid user, he is a final year Agricultural Extension “first class level” student, Abeokuta indigene of Ogun state. He is of the twenties bracket, a demagogue, pedant, patriot, agnostic, a primus-inter-pares, and he is not impious.
This young man, ever since he got admission into this citadel of learning, some five years ago, and out of his love for handball joined the Indy (Independence Hall) Handball team and was consequently invited to join the U.I Handball team (that was in his first year too). From them on, he has been consistent in the team and in his training too.
Due to his resilient attitude (after losing form for some years), and determined to hit the top, trained extra hard in camp, and this attitude towards success of his, earned him the (nickname) – STEROID MAN. His colleagues in camp, due to their laziness (would) not allow him lead any of their training sessions. Watch him in training and you’ll understand!
During the Inter Halls Competition (which Handball is an entry), Indy Hall has participated and never won despite having some U.I. stars amongst them. And this year was about becoming the one of those years until TAYO (SOLAGBADE) being in his final year, and determined to make lifting the cup for Indy a parting gift, and out of sheer determination, assembled some players together for early morning session trainings (constant early morning whistling heard by Independites is by him). This was consistently done for days and the end justified the means, as Kuti Hall was battered, Zik Hall (our terrorist for years) fell into the hands of Tayo (in fact, he scored the fastest, most spectacular “shocking” goal during the Indy-Zik meet) the hall of “LAME” inhabited by “Tedderats” refused to show up for the finals and so Indy won the Handball tournament (the only tournament won during the Inter Halls competition).
U.I Chief Coach Nwosu even commented about the Indy-Zik match saying (quote) “Indy played the match of their lives and Tayo was in his best” unquote.
[Note to reader: See my 2007 article titled “Become A Habitual Peak Performer – Learn How To Get Into Flow Or – The Zone More Frequently” – in which I narrate details of an experience I had while playing that match]
Despite Zik’s delay tactics and importation of Papa (a good player from Lagos), Zik fell. Tayo was seriously “cut-out”, but due to the match plan he had previously, the job was left for Collins, Yomi Oduguwa, Kayode Abbas, Deji, Dicta and Bambo, not forgetting Bammy (Oh he was good), and they had the job perfectly done.
It is my surprise that after years of playing Handball for Indy and U.I., and being the only event won this year, due to the patriotism shown by Tayo (and the dedicated efforts of his colleagues) the Sports Commissioner and Indy exco refused to accord the Indy team its place during the annual dinner, making it a point for all Handballers to boycott the dinner. So that explains why Tayo and his colleagues were absent during award/recognition.
I look forward to a situation whereby Indy Hall exco should not be ingrates (especially Sports Commissioner), by at least making him realize his worth by organizing a send-forth or make sure that of the N30,000 generated by the exco, he is given a parting present.
I learnt he may come back for his Masters programme. By then Awo or Balewa should be watched out for. With him leaving us now (and maybe “as I heard” his eventually playing International/professional) Collins will now be bestowed the opportunity of seeing Tayo’s pet to constant fruition and maturity. Bammy too is not left out. Handball is now gaining prominence, being world’s second fastest game. TAYO (SOLAGBADE), Indy Press wishes you the best in your future endeavours. BRAVO.
